John E. CONNER, 20, Akron, a former Akron high school basketball star, drowned at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 1968 while attempting to swim the Wabash river at Vincennes.

Conner, a Vincennes university sophomore, was reported by witnesses to have tried to swim the Wabash near the George Rogers Clark memorial. They said a third of the way across, he turned back, then vanished under the water. Melvin FOWLER, a Vincennes fisherman, recovered the body.

He was born Feb. 22, in 1948, in Peru, the son of Harold and Harriet Jean FELLER CONNER. A graduate of Akron high school in 1966, he had spent his life in the Akron community. He was a member of the Akron Methodist church.

The boy was a member of Akron high school's varsity basketball team during his junior and senior years. He was a regular starter for the Flyers as a 5-8 senior guard in 1965-66 and
scored an average of 14.3 points a game as Akron compiled a 15-8 won-loss record.

Surviving with the parents are one sister, Judith [CONNER], at home; two brothers, Rodney [CONNER], a freshman at Vincennes university, and Dean [CONNER], at home; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Edwin FELLER, Bunker Hill; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. John CONNER, Chili, and aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Akron Methodist church. The Revs. Daniel BENGSTON and Claude FAWNS will officiate. Burial will be in the Akron cemetery. Friends may call at the Sheetz funeral home in Akron after 2 p.m. Tuesday until noon on Wednesday and at the church one hour prior to services.
