Cornelius Demarest died at his home Saturday of grip, aggravated by general debility. His daughters, the Misses L.L. and Mary Demarest, were with him when he died. He was born August 16, 1803, at Nanuet, Rockland County, N.Y., and therefore died in his 96th year. He was of Huguenot ancestry and his ancestors had lived in Rockland County for a century. His father, Matthew Demarest, lived to be 90 years old. Mr. Demarest was a tanner and a currier during the early part of his life, but had retired from business since his 60th year. He was a Democrat in politics and in his native town had held offices of school trustee, supervisor and assemblyman, holding the latter office in 1845, when it took three days to make the journey to Albany. He moved to New York before the Civil War, residing in Washington street until 1867, when he came to Brooklyn, living in the Twenty-fifth Ward ever since. He voted at every election until he was 92, being for some years the oldest voter in the district. At his 95th birthday anniversary last August he held a reception at his home, which was largely attended. He was married twice. Five children out of eight survive him, the eldest being Mrs. C.A. Pye of Brooklyn, widow of Colonel Edward Pye of the Ninety-fifth New York State Volunteers, who was killed at Cold Harbor in 1864. The remaining children are Abraham C. Demarest, Mrs. D.N. Walling, Miss L.L. Demarest, and Miss Mary Demarest. Of the grandchildren there are six living- Calvin Onderdonk of Deposit, N.Y., and Leigh Pye, William Onderdonk, J. Park Walling, Edward Pye, Charles E. Walling, Miss Carrie Walling, and Mrs. Philip E. Staib, all of Brooklyn. Nine great-grandchildren are living, among them are Harry Curtis Pye, Miss Elsa Claire Pye, and Miss Anna Teed.∼From the "New York Times" Feb of 1899

Cornelius M. Demarest died at his home, 349 Monroe street, Brooklyn, on Saturday, hin the ninety-sixth year of his age. He was born in Nanuet, Rockland county and was descended from settlers who came to Nanuet in the seventeenth century. He was a farmer in the early life but gave up that business to go into mercantile pursuits in Western New York. He retired from business thirty six years ago and settled in Brooklyn. He leaves one son, four daughters, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
