Olive J. Herman, age 95, of Sheboygan, died October 28, 2013 at Sheboygan Progressive Health Care Center.
She was born February 4, 1918 in Manitowoc to John and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Pribek, the oldest of eight children. She attended schools in both Lena and Manitowoc, graduating from Manitowoc's Industrial Institute. Olive was always proud of the work she did as an electrician's assistant at the Manitowoc shipyards during WW II. She worked on two submarines, the Peto and the Pogi before moving to Washington DC with navy husband, Rollie whom she married on April 29, 1943. While there she did bookkeeping for Ross-Saturn Shoe Emporium, a large exclusive retailer that catered to the wives of diplomats and high ranking military. In 1946 the couple returned to the Sheboygan area and were the proprietors of Rollie Herman's Beverage and Liquor Store in Sheboygan Falls. Rollie preceded her in death on August 22, 2005.
Olive was a member of Zion UCC in Sheboygan (now Zion Covenant). Over the years she was also a very active volunteer with the Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls as a leader and camp counselor. She was an avid bowler and also enjoyed big band music, gardening, gambling, and playing cards. As an active member of Sheboygan Elk's Lodge 299 since 1946, Olive also volunteered for many fundraising endeavors. She was also an avid Packer, Badger, and Brewer fan and even attended spring training baseball games while wintering with her daughter in Phoenix. She was a superb cook and baker who would frequently prepare a traditional Bohemian meal for her relation and became known as "Auntie Good Cookie" to her niece, nephews, and their families from the Christmas cookie decorating parties -an annual tradition for two generations.
She is survived by her daughter; her brother; her sister; her "adopted" daughters, Sandy, Nancy, and Kaye, who had lost their own mothers; and other relatives.
In addition to her husband, Rollie, she was preceded in death by her son, John Paul; her sister, Evelyn Williamson; brothers, Harry, Ervin, Richard, and Vernon; and her son-in-law, Patrick Mueller.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 12 Noon at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Olive's second cousin, Father Jim Pribek of Buffalo, NY, will be the officiant. Burial will follow at Wildwood Cemetery. A time of visitation and support will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Until her last days, Olive still had a real zest for life. She was adored by many and will be missed by all.
