Pontiac Police Department K-9 Officer "Draco," and his beloved partner, Pontiac Police Officer, Casey J. Kohlmeier, were both killed when an allegedly impaired driver broadsided their vehicle.

K-9 Officer Draco died at the scene, and Officer Kohlmeier passed away within the hour at our local hospital.

Draco was nearly 10 years old when he died. The photo on the right is several years old, and he looks much younger here. He actually had quite a bit of gray on his muzzle at the time of his death. More recent pictures depict that, but I like this one, because Draco's face is just so serious and beautiful!

Draco was cremated, and his ashes were buried with his beloved Casey. Draco was buried with a favorite chew toy. Officer Kohlmeier's best pal and sidekick Draco was a Belgian Malinois. Draco's named is pronounced like 'Drocko.'
Casey was from my hometown and attended the same church as me. I had a conversation with him shortly before they died. We happened to meet in the parking lot of a store we were both shopping at. It was the last time I ever spoke to him.

Thousands of mourners attended the funeral. There were 60-plus K-9 Officers and their K-9 partners in attendance from throughout the state of Illinois, as well as other states. The funeral procession numbered in the hundreds, with every police agency in Illinois sending a vehicle. The multitude of police, fire and ambulance vehicles with lights flashing is something I'll never forget.

It's been a sad week for our town.
