Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Wednesday, April 13, 1949, page 2:
  John Marion Reid of 828 Troy road, a lifetime resident of this city, died Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. at his residence from complications of a heart ailment. He worked in the coal mines for 51 years.
  He was born July 15, 1877, in Earlington, Ky., and had attained the age of 71 years, eight months and 27 days. He was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Reilly Reid. He was married to Miss Anna Retzlaff in September, 1899, at St. Mary's Catholic church by the last Rev. C.A. O'Reilly.
  Beside his wife, he is survived by one son, John, Jr., one sister, Mrs. Helen Yates of Chicago and one grandson. Three brothers, William, George and Charles Reid and one sister, Sister Florence of the Order of Precious Blood, preceded him in death.
  He was a member and past president of Progressive Miners Local 71, past commander of Spanish War Veterans of Granite City encampment 121, a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and the Holy Name society.
  Friends may call at the Lesley Marks funeral home after 12 o'clock Thursday until Friday at 10:30 when services will be held from the funeral home and at 11 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church with the Rev. P.P. McGuinesss in charge.
  Interment will be in Calvary cemetery.
  The rosary will be recited Thursday evening at 8:30 at the funeral home led by the Rev. P.P. McGuiness.
