Rapton began his auto retailing career in Long Beach after serving in the Korean War. He came to Sacramento in 1961 to become general manager and partner of Mike Salta Pontiac on Del Paso Boulevard. The following year the dealership was one of the first auto dealers to locate on Fulton Avenue.
In 1969 Rapton became sole owner of the dealership, and changed the name to Mel Rapton Pontiac GMC Trucks. It became Mel Rapton Honda in 1982.
Rapton supported more than 200 charities over the years, particularly the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home and the Sharing Place, which provides lodging to patients receiving medical treatment and their families.
