He was born on July 24, 1930 in Springfield, MA the son of George W., Sr. and Mildred (Shea) Cowan.
George attended local schools in Springfield and majored in Biology at the American International College, graduating in 1957.
He was a Korean War veteran and served in the US Marine Corp, Second Marine Air Wing at Cherry Point, NC teaching Atomic, Biological and Chemical topics. He was awarded the National Defense Medal.
George was an earth science teacher at Frontier Regional High School for 32 years retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Oak Ridge Detachment in Bernardston. George loved model railroading, Barbershop Quartet singing and was a member of the Amherst Railway Society. He was an avid naturalist all his life and enjoyed hiking outdoors. He also played the accordion.
Among his survivors George leaves his daughter, Kristina Cowan and her husband Gary Giger of Bethel, VT.
