Mishawaka--Orville "Ed" Lewis. 87, passed away Monday, October 28th, in his residence surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Raymond and Josephine Lewis. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty (Mahler) Lewis, and their children, Diane A. (Thomas) DeLong of Powhatan, Virginia, Susan E. (William) Becker of Phoenix, Arizona, and Edward R. (Patricia) Lewis of Westminster, Colorado. Three grandchildren; Beth D. (Ron) Blumer, Jon T. (Julie) DeLong and Andrew M. Becker. Four great-grandchildren, Mara and Emme Blumer, Nathan and Carley DeLong. Three sisters survive, Charlotte Janowiak, Miriam Shearer and Genevieve Dunn; and by a brother, Raymond Lewis.
Ed was preceded in death by two brothers Donald and James Lewis; and three sisters, Frances Gregory, Virginia Rollins and Evalyn LaCluyce. Ed was a member of St. Piuo X Catholic Church since the early 1950's. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council Number 4263. He was a member of the Father Nieuwland Forth Degree Assembly. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #360, a member of the DAV and the American Legion. He was a founding Member of the North Penn olunteer Fire Dept. and wirked at Uniroyal for 42 years. Ed enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Morrison DD560, which was sunk off Okinawa on May 4, 1945. He was awarded five battle stars and the Purple Heart. Some of Ed's favorite hobbies were wood-working, gardening, card playing, and he was a master of joke telling. He was an avid Notre Dame fan. A funeral Mass will be held for Ed at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, on Thursday, October 31st, at 10:30 a.m. Friends will be received from 4 until 7 p.m. at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, today and also for one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church.
