He arrived in Rutland after a rather tumultuous travels and illnesses in 1845, and began work at that time as a teller in The Bank of Rutland, and over time rose in position with that institution until his retirement in 1861.
Shortly before his retirement, on May 30, 1855 he married Julia, daughter of William and Cynthia A. (Hickock) Page. Her brother John Boardman Page was The President of The Bank of Rutland, and also President of The Rutland Railroad, Vice President of The Central Vermont Railroad, and Allotment Commissioner for The United States government during The Civil War (personally appointed by Abraham Lincoln). John B. Page would eventually achieve the office of Vermont State Treasurer, and finally, in 1866, Governor of Vermont.
Julia (Page) Kellogg died October 17, 1890 and Samuel eventually remarried on March 20, 1895 to Roxanna Ives.
He died at his home, No. 47 North St. Rutland at 7am Saturday November 2, 1905. He was 85
