Nora Townsend, 92; Ex-Governor's Widow
HARTFORD CITY, Ind. – Nora Townsend. 92, Winter Haven, Fla., died Sunday in Winter Haven Hospital.
She was the widow of the former Indiana Governor M. Clifford Townsend, who died Nov. 11, 1954.
A native of Marion, she moved to Winter Haven five months ago from Hartford City.
Her husband was elected governor on the Democratic ticket in 1936 and served 1937-41.
He was elected to the state legislature in 1922. In 1925 he was elected superintendent of Grant County schools, a position he held for 4 ½ years. He was a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1928, but lost.
He was elected Indiana's lieutenant governor in 1932, serving under Governor Paul G. McNutt. Townsend became the state's first full-time lieutenant governor in 1933. His duties consisted of presiding over the state Senate, being agriculture commissioner and executive officer of the state Department of Commerce and Industry.
He was director of Agriculture War Relations during World War II.
Mrs. Townsend was a member of the State Assembly Club, Century Club, Magazine Club and Psi Iota Xi Sorority here.
Survivors include a son Max, Lakeland, Fla., and two daughters, Lucille Marshall, Indianapolis, and Helen Duncan, Winter Haven.
Funeral arrangements will be made at Waters Funeral Home.
