He was the son of Alexander Moody and Elisabeth White and the grandson of James Moody and Mary Herron; many believe James is James Moodey. Elisabeth White was the daughter of William White and his wife Elizabeth Durrett. Alexander and his brother Samuel married sisters. They are acknowledged pioneers to the Benton County area, arriving around 1848.

William was the oldest brother of the following: Sarah J Miskimen, James Moody, Jehu W. Moody, John Moody (born 1845), David Mitchell Moody, Mary Elizabeth Smith, Martin K. Moody, Anderson Craig Moody, and George B. Moody

He married Jane D. Henderson on October 16, 1867 in Vinton; they had four sons and three daughters. They are: John Alexander (1868-1934), Sadie Perry, Bessie Thompson, Jay Moody, Earl Moody, Thomas Moody (1885-?1898?), and Alta Mavis Bockenkamp.

He served with D Company, 8th Iowa Infantry. He enlisted on August 14, 1861 and was discharged in Selena, Mississippi on April 20, 1866. He received a pension for this service; Jane's application for his pension was finally approved on January 23, 1904.

William Moody an old and respected citizen of Shellsburg, passed away at his home in the west part of the city Wednesday evening. He had been suffering for years from a cancer on his neck, caused by a powder burn he received in the army. He was buried under the auspices of the G.A.R. and a large number of them were at his funeral. The ceremony took place at the home and the burial at Strawn's cemetery, east of town.
