Frederick (Friedrich) Blottman was born in Germany and in 1854 immigrated to the United States with his wife, Mary Magdalena (Alter) and two young children, Bernhard (Barney) and Rosine (Rosa). The Blottman family settled in Greenville, Ohio and two more children were born: Catherine and Mary. When Frederick died in 1896, the following obituary was published in the Greenville Daily Advocate newspaper:

Frederick Blottman, aged about 82 years, and a well-respected old citizen, died Friday night [Jan. 24, 1896]. He was the father of Barney Blottman, the well-known proprietor of the China Palace. Funeral services Monday morning [Jan. 27, 1896] at the Catholic Church.
