Adrian was a preacher for awhile for the Second Adventist Church. He later became a member of the United Methodist Church. He was involved in many businesses including as a partner in the Hutchings Manufacturing Company in Clyde, Ohio and as a traveling salesman. In 1890, he moved his family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he attended medical college and received a diploma as a physician and surgeon. He then returned to Clyde with his family.
Dr. Hutchins was also an inventor and it was one of his inventions that led to his death. He invented a self-lighting lamp and as he was preparing to use it, the chemicals exploded. His eyesight was immediately destroyed and the injuries were so severe that his leg had to be amputated, with Dr. Hutchins giving instructions for it's removal. He passed away the next morning.
