A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

John was born in Norway about 1882 and his parents were also Norwegian-born. He immigrated to the US around 1901. John was single all his life.

He was admitted to the "Oregon State Hospital for the Insane" in Salem, Oregon on 5/13/1912. His mental state was described as "manic depressive - manic type." He was a patient at that facility for almost 20 years and appeared there as a patient in the censuses of 1920 and 1930. In 1920 it was reported he worked in the asylum's bakery and received wages. On 5/3/1932 he died at the institution of chronic myocarditis.
