First name varies with sources: either "Louis" or "Lewis". "Louis" is found as used in the obituary for his wife, Alta, in reference to him. However, it should be noted that there are several census reports that use "Lewis".
Unfortunately, his own obituary and inscription only uses the initials "L.L.", so trying to determine which version is more correct is 50/50 at best.
Will use "Louis" on this memorial for the first name, with "Lewis" as the nickname, but with that caution.

L.L. VERNON DIED EARLY THIS MORNING
L. L. Vernon passed away this morning at his home on West Kirkwood Street following an illness of two months and a half duration. Deceased was 75 years old.
Mr. Vernon was born in Burlington, Iowa December 16, 1845. In 1901 he moved to Fairfield where he has since resided.
On December 28, 1882, he united in marriage with Alta Welch. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. F. H. Stuart (sic. Lulu Vernon, wife of Frank H. STEWART) of Chicago, Mrs. John Ogle of California, Mrs. T. C. Baichly, Miss Willard eVrnon (sic) of N. Y. and Madge Vernon of this city. He is also survived by two brothers, John, of Los Angeles, Cal., J. S. of Oskaloosa (sic. likely Jay S Vernon), and three sisters, Mrs. J. H. (sic. or "B." ??) Allen of Washington, Iowa, Mrs. Hugh Highy of Pasadena, Cal., and Mrs. J. E. Hickenbottom (sic. see: Edith Vernon Hickenbottom) of this city.
Funeral services will be helld Saturday from the late residence. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
