BACHELOR'S BODY FOUND IN RIVER
Michael Mella Missing Since Friday Morning

Michael Mella, 70, year old Manitowoc bachelor, was found floating 30 feet out in the Manitowoc river at the foot of North 11th street this morning. Coroner Theodore Teitgen termed the drowning accidental.

Fred Schmidt, a Rahr Supply company electrician, saw the body in the water at 8:45 a.m. and informed the police. The Lade Fish company was called and a tug rushed to the scene. Chief James Kuplic and officers Ray Jackson and Melvin Reinhardt answered the call. A grappling pole was employed to bring the body to the river's bank after which three officers pulled it ashore. Dr. Teitgen was called.

Identification showed the man to be Mella.

Mrs. Rose Wicihowske of 1227 South 26th street, Mella's landlady, told the coroner and Detective Lt. Elmer Scherer that the victim had been rooming at her house for the past six months. She said he left the house between 8 and 9 o'clock yesterday morning and said he would not be home for dinner. He did not return for supper.

Mr. Mella was born in this city in 1878 and always resided here. In recent years he had been employed as a janitor at a seventh ward tavern. He never married.

Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Tillie Zych of Clover, a brother-in-law, Anton Feltman of this city and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Pffeffer funeral home and at 9 o'clock at the St. Mary church, the Rev. John Landowski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body may be viewed at the funeral home after Sunday noon where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday.
