From the Cincinnati Enquirer, July 14th 1944:

Newport Marine Is Killed In South Pacific Fighting; Covington Man Is Wounded.

Two Northern Kentucky Marines were listed as casualties yesterday. One was killed somewhere in the South Pacific area and the other was wounded in the fighting on Saipan.

Cpl. Frank Benning, Jr, 20 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Benning, 119 Chesapeake Ave, Newport, was killed in action when serving with the Marines in the South Pacific area, his parents learned yesterday.

The Navy Department telegram did not say where or when Corporal Benning was killed.

A former Newport High School student, Corporal Benning was employed at the Kirk and Bloom Company, Cincinnati, before he entered the Marine Corps in March, 1943. He had been overseas since April.

Besides his parents, he is survived by four sisters.

Originally interred at an American military cemetery in the South Pacific, Corporal Benning was brought home and buried with his family at Saint Stephen Cemetery on June 10, 1948.

His name appears on a memorial to World War II veterans from the Newport, Kentucky neighborhood of Cote Brilliante that gave their lives for their country.
