Sheboygan Press, May 14, 1960:
Arthur O. Nikisch, 60, 911 Niagara Ave., died at 1:30 a m. today at St. Nicholas Hospital following a short illness. He had been confined to the hospital since April 29.
Born in Sheboygan, Dec. 8, 1899, the son of Charles and Anna Zutz Nikisch, he always made his home here. He attended Bethlehem Lutneran School and was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. For many years he was employed as a foreman at the Bemis-Riddell plant and the American Chair Co.
He was married to Anna Mae Fortin and she survives him together with a son, Lloyd, and two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Hazel) Menzer and Mrs. Oakley O. (Isabelle) Frank all of this city; five grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Edna Bayens and Mrs. Alex Dotz, both of Sheboygan.
His parents and one son, Donald, preceded him in death.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Nikisch was very active in conservation affairs. At the time of his death he was vice president of the Sheboygan County Conservation Association; vice president of the Sheboygan Marsh Waterfowl Management Committee; president of the Suscha-Fale Sportsmen's Club; vice president of the Petermann Hunting and Fishing Club, he served for many years as a member of the County Conservation Congress and also served on the state and national water fowl advisement committees. He was president of the Home Folks Club and a member of the Petermann Bowling Team for many years.
He served as a deputy warden and deputy sheriff in Sheboygan County and was very active in teaching conservation practices to youth groups, especially in tree planting, fish and game releases, etc.
He was known throughout the state for his activity as a turtle hunter and he trapped thousands of snapping turtles every year, processed and sold the meat to hotels, restaurants and individuals.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, funeral services will be held there at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Hans Tornow, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
