Lester Benbow was a schoolteacher in Foresthill, as well as a member of the Foresthill Safety Club. When the call went out that there were two people trapped in an old mining shaft at Michigan Bluff, Lester as well as others (including the Iron Mine Conservation Camp and firefighters from the state division of forestry in Foresthill) answered the call. The two men who were trapped while exploring the old and long-abandoned, and aptly named Hazard Mine, were overcome by the foul air and lack of oxygen. In the end both the trapped men survived, but Lester died in his attempt in the rescue of a fellow man. He was 41 years old and the father of a newly-adopted son.
