Velma attended Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She married Carl Eugene Hollenback on 7 October 1914 in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk, Iowa. She and Carl owned and operated Hollenback Piano Company in Spokane, WA. They had two children, Charles Harvey who died at birth May 1916 in Spokane, WA, and Elizabeth Emaline.
Velma suffered a stroke and was in a nursing home for 6 years before her death. She was cremated and her ashes are in the outside crypt in the Garden of Peace at Riverside Cemetery
