John was the son of Henry and Catherine Hake Arnold from Germany and was one of 10 children which included 4 full siblings and six half-siblings. His father was married twice. After his first wife, Catherine, died in Ackley, Iowa, Henry married Rebecca Menken. John was an oil driller and was living in Marion, Indiana at the time of his marriage to Elva on Christmas Day in 1902 in Wood County. They had no children. Soon after their marriage the couple moved to Robinson, Illinois, and, after about 20 years, moved back to Ohio and lived in Lucas County. John was of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair and was slightly balding. John was working in Belvidere Township in Montcalm County, Michigan, when he suffered a heart attack at the age of 59.
