Mary was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen G. Martin, who brought his family to Janesville in 1850. She was a graduate of Janesville High School and later taught both English and Latin at the school. In 1868 she married Levi Lee Beer, a skilled builder and wood carver.
