According to the 1930 U.S. Census, Laughlin and his family emigrated from Canada in 1924, settling in Naugatuck, Connecticut, where in that year they were residing at 168 Maple Street. Ten years later, the family had moved to 95 Spring Street; and by the 1950s, Laughlin and his wife were empty-nesters, renting an apartment at 295 Spencer Street.
Widowed at age 85 and long-retired from the Eastern Malleable Company in Union City, Laughlin MacDonald had survived his wife by three years and passed away at Waterbury Hospital shortly after his 89th birthday. Services were private; and following a funeral Mass at Saint Francis Church, he was laid to rest next to his wife in Saint James Cemetery.
