Attorney Thomas M. Anich, Ashland, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2001, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born August 31, 1918, in Ashland, the son of Matt and Cecilia (Devcic) Anich .
He was united in marriage to Beverley J. Boyle on September 20, 1963. He attended DePadua High School, Northland College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he obtained his Doctor of Laws degree. His lifetime involvements include the Veterans of Foreign Wars, University of Wisconsin Law Alumni Association, Northland College Alumni Association, Chequamegon Theatre Association, 30-year Board member of Wisconsin Judicare, Trustee of Northern Waters Library System, Advisory Board Member of Memorial Medical Treatment Center, U.S. Magistrate, National Conference of Christian and Jews, and others.
He was a member of the Ashland-Bayfield Counties Bar Association, State Bar of Wisconsin, American Bar Association, Wisconsin Appellate Court, Wisconsin Supreme Court and United States Supreme Court.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the South Pacific.
Tom devoted his time and talents for 52 years to his many clients, rich and poor alike, often saying the Law is a jealous mistress. He was a defender of the rights of the oppressed and those who could not speak for themselves. He was an example and inspiration to his entire family to pursue public service. Among his many interests were the Law, Democratic politics, history, reading and most of all, his family.
He received the Northland College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. Many pages could be filled with his accomplishments in the practice of law, his support of the Ashland community, pro bono work, for which he received the 1999 State Bar of Wisconsin Outstanding Professional Award for Exceptional Contributions to the Advancement of the Legal Profession, and his labor for the betterment of mankind. During his long legal career he was involved in trial work both as Municipal Judge for Ashland County and in private practice.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and participated in Democratic campaigns on the local, state and national level.
Survivors include his wife, Beverley, Ashland, daughters Nina (Michael) Ronning, Rice Lake; and Mary (Pete) Daniels, Waupaca; beloved grandsons, Brian Ronning and Daniel Ronning, Rice Lake; brothers, Rudy (Agnes) Anich , Ashland, Edward Anich , Ashland; sisters, Helen (Al) Broz, Hooks, Texas; Elaine Anich , Milwaukee; and Rosemarie Anich -Erickson, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Emil Anich .
A gathering of family and friends will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Frost Home for Funerals. Inturnment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Ashland. Visitation will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Regional Hospice, Northern Waters Library Service, Northland College or chosen organization.
