From the Cincinnati Enquirer, March 15, 1944:

Two Kentucky Soldiers Dead; Another Missing In Action; Hope For Officer Abandoned

One Northern Kentucky solder has been killed in action in Italy; another missing in the Pacific area for more than a year has been listed as dead and a third is missing in action in Italy.

Private First Class John T. Schmitz was killed in action in Italy February 12th. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schmitz, 724 East Tenth Street, Newport. Schmitz, 34 years old, had been overseas since November. He was serving with an infantry unit. Entering the Army last May, he received basic training at Camp Shelby, MS.

A graduate of West Night High School, Cincinnati, Schmitz was employed at the Palace Hotel, Cincinnati, before entering the service. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Seaman Second Class Paul Schmitz, attached to the Navy Recruiting Office, Federal Building, Cincinnati.
