Thomas Jardine was born at Whitehaven in Cumbria, England, on 9 March 1881. His parents were innkeepers John Jardine and Hannah Jardine (nee Wilson) who had married at Camerton in 1878. Thomas emigrated to New Zealand in around 1910 where he worked as a farm labourer. During World War I he joined the Wellington Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion [Service No. WWI 39822]. Thomas died at the 17th Casualty Clearing Station of wounds received in Belgium on 6 October 1917 and was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery [XXV. C. 13A.].
