MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Glenda K. Lowans, 49 of Martinsburg, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at City Hospital after a three-year battle with breast cancer.
Born April 23, 1955, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Janice L. Detrow Penwell of Boonsboro and the late Woodrow W. Penwell.
She was a member of Mount Lena United Methodist Church. She attended Butlers Chapel and Jones Spring United Methodist Church, where her husband is pastor.
She was a graduate of Boonsboro High School, Class of 1973.
She was a bookkeeper for B.J. Epps in Washington, D.C., a chairside dental assistant for Dr. Limpke in Bowie, Md., and a bookkeeper for Alex Chevrolet in Charles Town, W.Va.
She was actively involved in the Berkeley County American Cancer Society along with her husband, the Berkeley County Relay for Life, Cancer Ministry in and outside the church and, with her daughter, Janessa, in the Berkeley County Revengers Majorettes for eight years.
In addition to her mother,
she is survived by:
her husband, Jerry L. Lowans;
two sons,
Justin L.P. and
Gabriel F. Lowans;
one daughter, Janessa L. Lowans;
one grandson, Israel Lowans;
sister, Wanda Beard and husband, Curtis, of Hagerstown;
two nephews,
Christian and Jamie;
brothers-in-law,
Charles M. Mills and
James S. Mills.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by:
grandson, Jude;
maternal grandparents,
Webster F. and Kathleen S. Detrew;
paternal grandmother, Maggie Penwell Howell;
nephew, Joshua Beard;
mother-in-law, Mary V. Lowans and
a sister-in-law, Carol Mohr, who also died of breast cancer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m., at South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood, W.Va., with the Rev. Kenneth Reed officiating. Interment will be in Mount Lena Cemetery, Mount Lena, Md.
The family will receive friends at South Berkeley Chapel Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
