A Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin J. Binz, 89, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 E. Jefferson St., Hampshire, with Fr. Joseph P. Nicolosi officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, at Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire, with Rosary at 2 p.m. Born July 14, 1916, in Stockton, the son of John and Kathryn (nee Donahue) Binz, he passed away suddenly Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, in his home. Melvin married Vera Schiesher at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Hampshire on Jan. 25, 1942. They were the longest married couple in the parish, and had happily celebrated their 65th anniversary recently. Mr. Binz was a longtime farmer in the Hampshire area who also raised livestock until his retirement in 2001. He also drove a school bus for District 300 for 17 years. He was a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Surviving are his wife, Vera; six children, Elaine (James) Setter of Hampshire, Leo (Kathryn) Binz of Cherry Valley, Adele (Don) Goff of Cadiz, Ohio; Sister Ella Binz O.S.F. of New Lenox, Dr. Carl (Barbara) Binz of Dubuque, Iowa and Lee (Elizabeth) Binz of Appleton, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne (Ellen Ann) Binz of Hurley, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, David Goff.
