CIVIL WAR CASUALTY, 7th KANSAS CAVALRY

Samuel Abbott was listed as age 19 on the 1860 Center, Doniphan County, Kansas Territory census with his parents, John & Elizabeth, who were listed as born in Virginia. Samuel was listed with seven siblings, ages 25 - 9, all listed as born in Indiana.

This family had been in Morgan County, Indiana in 1850, which lists the birth of John & Elizabeth in Kentucky, with their children born in Indiana. John Abbott & Elizabeth Fletcher were married in 1833 in Morgan County. (Indiana marriage index) Their sons in 1850 were listed as A. J., 14; F. M., 12; G. W., 10; & S. M., 8. Their daughters were Polly, 7, and Martha, 6. Sylvester & Elizabeth were listed as twin infants, one month old. John Abbott settled in Doniphan County, Kansas in 1859. Samuel Abbott of Troy, Kansas, enlisted in October of 1861 in the 7th Kansas Cavalry. Ancestry Civil War files state that he did not survive the war and list a "muster out" date of 28 Dec 1861. The Civil War military gravestone record lists a death date of 17 Dec 1861 and places his burial this cemetery.

Three of Samuel's brothers also enlisted from Kansas for service during the Civil War. George W. Abbott also has a military headstone in Doniphan County, Kansas. He served from August of 1862 to June of 1865 in Co. B, 13th Kansas Infantry.

Andrew Jackson Abbott, also of Troy, enlisted in September of 1863 and served to June of 1865 in Co., K, 14th Kansas Cavalry. He is buried in Iowa, memorial # 11608579.

Francis M. Abbott of Troy enlisted in September of 1862 in Co. B, 13th Kansas Infantry. He served until June of 1865 and is buried in Oklahoma, memorial # 139630198.

Samuel's parents, John & Elizabeth Abbott were in Doniphan County, Kansas in 1870, but John Abbott, age 69, born in Kentucky, was recorded as a widower in the 1880 Lewis, Holt, Missouri census. His son, George W. Abbott, 41 IN, was with him, as well as his daughter, Sarah J (Jane) Varvell, 30 IN, who had married Washington Varvel in 1879 in Holt County, Missouri. Sarah Jane Varvel's husband and mother-in-law, Parthena Varvel, age 59, were listed in the same household as John Abbot in 1880.

The death dates and burial locations of John, Elizabeth, and also Sarah Jane (nee Abbott) Varvel, are unknown. Washington Varvel remarried in Holt County, Missouri, and is buried there.
