Verschel was born in East Jordan, Michigan (according to her birth certificate her birth place is South Arm Township)a few months after her family arrived there from Bird Island, Minnesota. Her father had been the publisher of a newspaper in Bird Island and moved to East Jordan where he had purchased "The Enterprise" a newspaper in this then thriving lumber mill town.

Verschel attended the East Jordan Public School from which she was graduated about 1909. Shortly after finishing high school, she met Jay Trombly, a chemist for the East Jordan Furnace Plant. Their courtship continued for five years and they were married in East Jordan on November 29, 1916. This courtship was conducted at long distance, because for most of the five years, Jay worked in Chicago, Illinois.

After their marriage Verschel and Jay moved to Flint, Michigan where Jay had employment with Westen and Mott, a company later to become Buick Motors. Jay was a devoted and faithful employee in the Inspection Department of Buick Motors, retiring at age 65 in 1952.

Vershel and Jay had one child, Joyce Lorraine Trombly, who was born in 1924, in Flint, Michigan.

Verschel and Jay lived the remainder of their lives in the Flint, Michigan area. Jay passed away in 1955 from a heart attack. Verschel lived alone in her home until 1969 when failing health necessitated that she move to live with her daughter in Flushing, Michigan. Her health deteriorated to the point where it became necessary to place her in a nursing home where she died of a coronary thrombosis on May 3, 1971. Her remains are interred in Flint Memorial Park as are those of her husband Jay.
