Major Lankford was a Helix Forward Air Controller and assigned to the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron at Da Nang. He was flying O-2A S/N 67-21337 near the village of Ngoc Tri seven miles south of Chu Lai in Quang Tin Province South Vietnam when he was shot down on Christmas Day, 1967.
