Mary made her social debut in New York and there met Francis Burton Harrison, whom she married on June 7, 1900 at Tuxedo Park, New York in a lavish society wedding. There were two daughters born to this marriage, Virginia and Barbara.
Mary died at St. John's Hospital of injuries from an automobile accident on Long Island, New York. Three other passengers, including her brother Charles Templeton, plus the chauffeur were injured.
The funeral for Mary was conducted at her home and the body sent by special train to San Francisco to be buried in the crypt where her her parents are entombed.
