"Hugh was commissioned 2ND Lieutenant into Company H, 78th Pennsylvania Infantry on October 12, 1861. He was promoted to Captain on April 16, 1863. During his term of service, the regiment was engaged at Stones River where he was commended for bravery; Chickamauga, where he received another commendation; Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and the Atlanta Campaign. Hugh was mustered out on November 4, 1864.

After the Civil War, he became Companion Number 12228 in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), the first post war veterans organization, composed mostly of former commissioned officers."
