James E. Steeprow, 88, of Corvallis died Sunday at Heart of the Valley Care Center.

He was born in Alsea. He was raised, educated and spent most of his life in Alsea.

He served for a short time in the service during World War II. Returning to Alsea, he logged in the area for most of his life until retiring.

He was a member of the Elks, Moose, Eagles, IOOF and Grange Lodges. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and playing pinochle.

He is survived by wife Ruth of Albany; sons James of Manassas, Va., Richard and Leslie of Albany and Edward of Vancouver, Wash.; stepchildren Greg McKnight of Albany, Jo Ann McDaniel of Culver, Christine Sieja of Lebanon, Lorilee Schmidt of Bend, Kathy Huggins of Salem, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi, whom he married in 1940; brothers Charles and Kenneth; sister Lucille Reed, and a great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Alsea Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Rinchart Sports Fund of Alsea in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis OR 97330.
