Fred LaLeike, 78, passed away at Aurora Medical Center in Hartford, on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005.
He was the beloved husband of Helen LaLeike.
Fred was born on April 17, 1927 in Shawano to Frederic and Louise LaLeike, and graduated from Stoughton High School in 1944.
He then served in the U.S. Army. Fred was stationed in Texas and the Army of Occupation in Germany, and received an honorable discharge in February 1947.
He entered the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in September 1947 and graduated in January 1951.
After graduation, he began a long, successful career as a teacher of history and Spanish in Harvard, Ill.
Before beginning to teach for the West Bend School District in 1957, Fred also taught in Lodi and Weyauwega.
He pursued his post-graduate work at Ripon College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Milwaukee.
In August of 1965, while his family proudly looked on, he earned his master's degree in Hispanic studies at the Univer-sidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico.
Fred retired from teaching in June 1989.
Fred married Helen on Aug. 12, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stevens Point.
During their 55 years of marriage, Fred and Helen traveled together many times to Mexico and other Central American countries.
They also enjoyed traveling through South America, Spain, Portugal and most of the United States.
In addition to his beloved wife, Helen, Fred is survived by a daughter, Susan (Charles) La-Leike-Olson of Florida; a son, Alan LaLeike of West Bend and a granddaughter, Rima Preston of New York.
He is also survived by a brother, Louis (Berdine) LaLeike of Stevens Point; a sister, Jeanne Hills of Cocato, Minn. and sisters-in-law, Lucille LaLeike of Manitowoc and Judy LaLeike of Kennet Square, Pa.
Fred's memory will also be cherished by his numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Lowell and Phillip.
In accordance with the wishes of Fred and his family, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to either the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center in West Bend or the Columns Scholarship Foundation in Fred's name would be appreciated.
