BATAVIA — Sara "Sally" Jane Adams, 100, of Batavia, died July 16, 2005, at the Michealson Health Center in Batavia.

She was the only child of Walter and Lulu (nee Conrad) Bartlett. She was born Jan. 29, 1905, in Jerseyville, Ill., and was the first person baptized in the newly-built Jerseyville Baptist Church.

She was a graduate of Hardin College in Mexico, Mo., and also attended Brenau College in Gainsville, Ga., and well as the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University.

She married Arthur Adams of Pleasant Hill., Mo., on March 5, 1927. Both were educators, coming to the Fox Valley in 1941, and living on the campus at Mooseheart, where for 11 years Mr. Adams was principal of the high school.

In 1952, the family moved to Batavia, where Mr. Adams taught second grade at Louise White School. After her retirement from teaching in 1971, Mrs. Adams was a member of the staff of the Batavia Public Library for 16 years. During this time, she delivered reading materials to homebound residents of Batavia. She attended the grand opening of the Batavia Public Library in 2002.

In 1982, Mrs. Adams was chosen by U.S. Rep Tim Corcoran to represent the 14th Congressional District in the Senior Citizens Program, held in Washington, D.C. An event that benefited Batavia as a result of the time spent in the capital was the Senior Citizens Health and Information Fair, held in Batavia in September, 1982, and which became an annual event. Rep. Corcoran had first thought of holding this event in Geneva, but Mrs. Adams urged him to change that plan, saying Batavia had an ideal spot for such an event, namely the Batavia Civic Center, and so that is where the fair took place.

In 1983, Sara Adams received the Citizen of the Year Award, given by the Chamber of Commerce. She also was active in community affairs, a past president of the Batavia Women's Club, past president of the Senior Citizens Club, a member of the EA Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and for several years librarian for the Batavia Hospice. She also was editor of "The Tower," the newsletter of the Batavia Congregational Church, for six years.

Mrs. Adams further was a member of the Aurora Chapter of Retired Teachers, a member of the Batavia Historical Society, and a monthly host at the Depot Museum. She served on the board of Senior Shared Housing and belonged to the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners.

She was active into her 10th decade in "Friendly Visitors," a group of volunteers who visit shut-ins and those in nursing retirement homes.

Mrs. Adams is survived by her four children, John (Ann) Adams of Estes Park, Colo., Jane (Charles) Libberton of Plant City, Fla., and twin sons Arthur (Janice )Adams of LaGrange, Ky., and Andrew Adams of Naperville; and by six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1956.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2005, at the Batavia Congregational Church, 21 S. Batavia Ave.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Batavia Congregational Church or to the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, IL 60510.
