Harold C Smart, 15 Manning Place, Portsmouth, died suddenly last night after a heart attack. He was taken ill yesterday afternoon and death followed shortly.
He was a former employee of the Portsmouth Herald, and also was employed by the Portsmouth Times and the Morning Chronicle. He learned the typesetting business when a young man and followed this throughout his life. Only recently he purchased the printing business of Nelson T Wright on Bridge Street and had been operating that for the past few months.
Mr Smart was born in Ports Jan 14, 1891, the son of John J and Nellie (McGraw) Smart. He spent his entire life in Portsmouth.
He was interested in the principles of Masonry and belonged to St. John's Lodge, Washington Royal Arch chapter, and Davenport Council, Royal and Selected Masters. He was a member of Portsmouth Typographical Union 684 and also belonged to the Elks. He was a former member of Damon Lodge, Knights of Pythias. He attended the Universalist church.
Survivors include his wife, S. Frances Gilson Smart; a brother John W Smart, of Portsmouth, and a sister Mrs Albert P Haskell, of Beverly, Massachusetts.
