William was born in Bonshaw, Queens County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the eighth child and third son of Murdock and Euphemia MacLeod. He moved to Somerville, Massachusetts, with his mother; he did not marry. He served in the U.S. Army in WWI in the front lines in France; he drowned on a visit to PEI in the West River and is buried with his parents.
