Commodore Milton G. Wegeforth was born in San Diego in 1916, attended local schools, graduated from USC and pursued a career in engineering at Solar Aircraft. Wegeforth's father, one of the founders of the San Diego Zoo, encouraged son Milton in sailing on Mission Bay in 1927. Wegeforth became Star World champion in 1937 in "Lecky," and later raced the PC "Paula" and the 8 Meter "Prelude" to a number of victories. Wegeforth helped raised funds for construction of the club swimming pool. Milt's wife Eveline (Clark) and daughters Paula and Jo were active in club activities. Wegefoth, as president of the San Diego Zoological Society in 1957, encouraged the creation of the Children's Zoo. Wegeforth died in December 1998.
