NEWARK MOTHER CLAIMED IN DEATH
BURIAL IN NEWARK CEMETERY SUNDAY OF MRS. KATIE ELIZABETH ABBETT, AGED ALMOST 70 YEARS.
Katie Elizabeth Steffen, daughter of Conrad and Louise Fox Steffen, was born near Liberty, Illinois, January 1, 1865, and departed this life at her home, east of Newark, Missouri, December 23, 1943. aged 78 years, 11 months and 23 days.
Her parents moved from Illinois to Steffenville when she was a small child.
She was united in marriage to James Russell Abbett on January 1, 1885, and to this union three children were born, viz: Bertie Lee Abbett, who died in 1918; Ira Russell Abbett, of Columbia, Missouri and Guy Walker Abbett, of near Newark. Mr. Abbett died in 1932.
Besides the two sons, Mrs. Abbett is survived by three sisters — Mrs. Matilda Wilt, of Newark; Mrs. Lula Woolfe, of Philadelphia, Missouri, and Mrs. Charles Cheatum, of Kingman, Kansas, and two brothers, George Steffen, of Newark, and Frank Steffen, of Steffenville.
She leaves four grandchildren — Mrs. Oneta Pierce, of Columbia, Missouri; Mrs. Laverne Snoddy, of Shelbina; Russell Abbett, of the United States Navy, and Minnie Lee Abbett, of Los Angeles, California. She also leaves one great granddaughter, Joyce Pierce, of Columbia. Many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends will miss "Aunt Kate," as she was lovingly called.
Funeral services were held at the Newark Christian church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Henry R. White after which the body was laid to rest in Newark cemetery.
