Carl was born in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Denmark, to assistant finance minister Johannes Christian Boëtius (1836-1916) and Emmely Elise Jacobsen (1839-1913).

Carl married Karen Margrethe Blad February 3, 1895 at Lund Cathedral. Lund Cathedral is in Sweden but is just 23 miles from Copenhagen. Carl was a Statsaut revisor, meaning chartered accountant.

Carl and Karen had two sons: Johannes Christian (named after Carl's father), and Povl (born 1900). in 1916, Carl married Sigrid Weinschenck. Carl and Sigrid lived at Svinget 28 in Copenhagen for much of their married life, but by 1940 they had moved to Strandvejen 429, Ordrup. Sigrid still lived there after Carl's death. The apartment building is located on the water and was designed by the famous Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen. (As of 2015, the building housed the Bella Vista Apartments.)

Carl died September 15, 1940. His remains were cremated and his ashes preserved at the Bispebjerg Cemetery Crematorium.
