EDGAR NELSON DIES; FORMER 'NEWS' PUBLISHER

A former owner of what is now the Daily News Bulletin and former Missouri Secretary of State from 1947 to 1949, Edgar Nelson, died yesterday at the age of 87 in Wausau, Wisconsin.
The cause of death was not given. Nelson resided in a nursing home in Wausau, where a daughter lives.
Nelson published or owned newspapers in Brookfied, Boonville, Buncton, Marshall and Lebanon. In 1933 he was named chairman of the State Workman's Compensation Commission.
His appointment to fill an unexpired term as Secretary Of State was made by former Gov. Phil Donnelly. In 1953, Nelson was named state purchasing agent.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. the following Saturday in the Thatcher Funeral Home, Boonville.
In 1944 Edgar C. Nelson purchased the Linn County News from Todd Ormiston and his son, Dave. Although the newspaper was Republican for many years, Nelson was prominent in state Democratic circles for many years and he changed the paper's political policy.
After he took charge of the news, Nelson bought the Meadville Messenger and Laclede Blade.
On July 1, 1947, Nelson sold the Brookfield paper to Ira J. Williams and J. H. Skewes. The combined newspapers were published twice weekly until Aug 1, 1948, when the Brookfield Daily News was started. It was the first daily to be printed in Brookfield since the Depression years.
The daily publication continued as the News until 1951 when the Linneus Bulletin was consolidated and the paper became known as the Daily News-Bulletin.
In 1953, the Argus was sold to Mark Cramer, and he in turn sold it to the Brookfield Publishing Co., and the two papers were consolidated.
George Williams took ownership of the Daily News-Bulletin in 1965 upon the death of his father, Ira Williams.
