Obituary of Mr. Griffin, published in the Portland Observer, Tuesday, September 17, 1918:
"Allen A. Griffin, for nearly 70 years a resident of this vicinity, died at his home on Lincoln street late Friday afternoon.
He had been in poor health for many years and during the last few months had failed steadily. His illness dates from the time he was kicked by a horse years ago.
Mr. Griffin was born in Sebewa township July 2, 1850, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Griffin, moved to Portland a few years later.
He was one of 7 children, of whom but three survive. They are Mrs. M. S. Beden, Riverside, Cal.; Henry and Warren Griffin, Portland, D. G. Welppert, cashier of the Sunfield State Bank, is a nephew.
Years ago Mr. Griffin bought livestock and was in the meat business periodically. He was at one time a partner with Elba Stevenson, in the marble business.
June 6, 1882 he married Miss Ella Briggs, daughter of the late Artemus Briggs. Their only child, Bernice Griffin Cleveland, died in Colorado about two years ago. A grandson, Allen, survives. Oliver Cleveland, son-in-law, is in the service of his country in France. During his long illness he has had the constant care and attention of his wife. Of late Mrs. Derua Maynard and Mrs. H. A. Sprague, both closely related, have been with her.
Funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 at the house. Rev. John H. Stewart will come from Sparta to preach the funeral sermon."
Note: Date of death is based on the date of newspaper and the day of death listed.
Mr. Griffin was co-owner of the Portland Opera House when it was built in 1880.
