Elyse Shirts was born on May 13, 1797, in Kingswood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, a daughter of Crp. Matthias Shirtz (also Shurtz, Schurtz), a Revolutionary war soldier who fought at Yorktown, and Susannah McGeehan Shirtz. Her family left New Jersey for Middleton Twp., Columbiana County, Ohio in 1808 when she was 11, making the Shirtz, Shurtz, Schurtz family one of the oldest families in Columbiana County, Ohio. Her father was a farmer and blacksmith injured during the war so she took on the farming chores of her brothers and the family greatly needed the pension granted her father.

In 1815, she was courted by William Guy, the Guys being neighbors of the Shurtz family and the couple were married in the Spring of 1816. Except for a brief time (1860-1870) where they resided in St Clair Twp., the Guys lived in Middleton Twp., raising their children on their own small farm. William died first after over fifty years of marriage and a few years later, around 1875 his wife died at about seventy-eight years of age.
