"Captain Joseph Monks, who died at Peru on Sunday last, and was buried on Tuesday was well and favorably known in this city as a genial gentleman and companion. He was always to be met at democratic party conventions, and always was an earnest advocate of democratic principles. His death was the latent result of an accident received at Memphis, Tenn., while engaged in superintending the unloading of a barge.

"Captain Monks was born in Dublin county, Ireland, and was at the time of his death about fifty years of age. He came to this country in 1859, settling in Peru, where he was engaged for a great number of years in the ice trade. He leaves surviving him a wife and four children."
