Abner served with the Vermont volunteers during the Civil War. He mustered in on February 17, 1863, and contracted typhoid pneumonia a year later. He died February 15, 1864.

Some sources indicate Abner was a Private in Company G of the 11th Regiment, Vermont infantry. On March 30, 1864, the Lamoille Newsdealer (Hyde Park, Vermont), printed a letter from W.J. Cheney, reporting all soldiers serving in the 1st Vermont Artillery who had died from September 1, 1862 to March 13, 1864 at the hospital at Fort Slocum. Abner T. Campbell is included on that list.
