Althea was born to Ambrose and Anna Catherine Zuber Ochs. The youngest of four, she had one brother, Edwin, and two sisters, Bernetta and Edith Lucille. When she was only seven months old, her father died tragically after the barn he was in was struck by lightning. Her mother eventually married again to Wesley Cecil Underwood when Althea was 11 years old.
