Hyrum Ryberg Adams, age 66, died at his home on November 28, 2013 following a long illness.
He was born November 1, 1947 in San Francisco, California, and was the eldest son of Hyrum and Enid (Ryberg) Adams Thurman. Hydie was adored by his parents, who frequently recalled how outgoing and friendly he was to everyone. He maintained his love for people all his life.
Hyrum was joined by a brother, David, in 1950, and shortly thereafter both boys contracted polio. Hyrum's condition was very serious, and he was confined to a wheelchair from the age of three until he was six years old. During those years, his family returned to Salt Lake City, where siblings Eric, Richard, and Elizabeth were born.
As Hydie was confined to a wheelchair, his parents had the inspiration that he could focus his energies in learning to play the piano. Hyrum soon developed into a young protégé who was guided in his studies by Gladys Gladstone Rosenberg. Hyrum participated in many competitions in his youth and took first place at the Utah State Fair while attending Olympus High School.
In 1966, Hyrum went to New York City to study piano with Adele Marcus at the Julliard School of Music and later studied with Ivan Davis at the University of Miami. He received his Master's Degree in Music from the University of Utah in 1975.
Hyrum spent most of his life teaching piano privately and at the University of Utah. He was loved by his many students for his incredible warmth, gentleness, and ability to inspire a love of great music and a joy of piano playing.
As a pianist, he was a magnificent interpreter of classical music, particularly that of Alexander Scriabin, for whom he had a deep affinity. Those who had the opportunity to hear Hyrum play recall his extraordinary concentration and intense sensitivity, which were characteristic of everything he did.
Despite the health issues Hyrum developed in later years, he remained a loyal friend to his neighbors and family, all of whom loved him for his very gentle spirit and kind heart. The family would like to express special thanks for the years of love, care and devotion shown to Hyrum by Edna, Bob and Dawn, and Keith. You were a great source of happiness to him.
Hyrum married Pamela Ballard in 1971, and the couple had one child, Melanie. The couple later divorced. Hyrum is preceded in death by his father and mother.
Funeral services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East), East Millcreek, on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the services.
Interment will follow.
