Mrs. Nancy Emeline BROOKS, daughter of Newel and Martha BROCK, was born near Jonesboro, now Hobbieville, Greene County, Indiana on November 28, 1838, and departed this life July 25, 1930, aged ninety-one years, seven months and twenty-seven days.

The Brock family consisted of eleven members. The deceased was the eldest of nine children, and was the last to experience the Great Beyond. On June 11, 1857, she was married to Alfred L. BROOKS, who promptly responded to his county's call during our great Civil War, at the close of which enlistment, bearing an honorable discharge, he returned, broken in health as a result of the exposure and hardships endured during that memorable struggle, but the happy reunion of father and family was of short duration, as he soon responded to the last taps, thus depriving his wife of the comfort, counsel and assistance in bringing up four children in good citizenship in the country he had so gallantly defended and to which he had devoted so much time in the prime of his life.

Feeling deeply the dual responsibility, the bereaved wife must now assume, she manifested patience, skill and energy in directing the affairs of the family of which she had become the sole manager. She leaves a son and daughter, George BROOKS, of Jasonville, and Lillie DEAN, widow of Will F. DEAN, of Bloomfield with whom she mad her home for several years. One son, Benjamin, and a daughter Mrs. Sinnie B. MATTOX, departed this life a few years ago. The deceased also leaves eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her .departure.

In youth she united with the Baptist church, but after coming to Bloomfield, she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church in which organization she remained a faithful and consistent member until death. "Aunt Emma," as she was familiarly called, was a good kind, Christian woman whose acts of charity were not limited by the family circle nor the city boundary, and while she is removed from our midst; her Christian character and exemplary conduct while she was with us will serve as a beacon light to those who knew and loved her. The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. DEAN, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Jack MASTERS, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in Grand View Cemetery.
