Born in Springfield, she was the daughter of Charles and Alice (Troy) Durnin.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Francis Parish, North Adams. She received her early education in the parochial schools and graduated from St. Joseph High School, North Adams, in 1936. She graduated from Elms College, Chicopee, in 1940 with a bachelor of arts degree. After entering the convent, she earned a master of arts degree from Boston College in 1953.
After teaching at St. Catherine Academy, Newport, R.I., for nine years, she was diagnosed with a debilitating illness. She became a resident of the Mont Marie Infirmary, later the Mont Marie Health Care Center. At Mont Marie, she served the community as a switchboard operator and notary public from 1961 to 1970. During the many years of her illness, she was active in the Catholic Union of the Sick in America and with the help of friends, served as New England coordinator of its programs held at Mont Marie.
Besides her Sisters in the community, she leaves a brother, Charles Durnin of Green Valley, Ariz.; two sisters, Alice Hill of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Catherine Palmer of Live Oak, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Two aunts, Sr. Mary Antoinette Durnin and Sr. Mary Chrysostom Durnin, and a great-aunt, Sr. Mary Antoinette Hatton, are deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Sister Alice Maria Durnin will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 22, 5 p.m., in the Mont Marie Chapel. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery.
Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 22, 2-4:30 p.m., at Mont Marie with a prayer service at 3 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Ste. 1, Holyoke, MA 01040-2739.
